Card designs and initial information on 2026-27 O-Pee-Chee are out. The base set design again harkens back to the angular, colorless, drab feel of vintage O-Pee-Chee that we all love. Or, um…this is the 12th consecutive year in which I have no idea where the base design is coming from. The actual fun and colorful O-Pee-Chee vibe is reserved for the retro parallels, which do again look fantastic. 2025-26 Parkhurst proves Upper Deck is capable of mixing vintage inspiration and a modern touch; I wish they would go back to that approach for O-Pee-Chee base designs.
There are no massive changes to configuration, though there are a number of meaningful tweaks. The subsets found in the high-number short prints are slated to include 64 rookies, 15 league leaders, 10 award winners, and 10 postseason highlights. O-Pee-Chee had gotten away from these season in review-type subsets in the last four releases. I much prefer the planned 2026-27 high-number lineup to the redundant “all-stars” cards they had included in recent years.
Border color parallels for the full set include blue, red, yellow, orange /199, and purple /49. After being blaster exclusives for many years, yellow borders will now also be found in hobby. Orange borders are the blaster exclusives this year. The short prints also get rainbow foil /350, black foil /100, purple foil /49, green foil /33, and gold foil /1 parallels.
Familiar retro black borders /100 return to hobby boxes. There are new retro gold border /10 and retro red border blank backs /1 parallels that will only be found in hobby hot boxes. Retro blank backs will now only be found in these hot boxes. The hot boxes will be extremely limited, because they will supposedly contain nothing but these three retro parallels (blank backs, gold borders /10, and red border blank backs /1). If that is correct, I estimate there will be about 67 total hot boxes produced.
I am super disappointed that the main inserts will yet again be playing cards and Premier. I do love the playing cards and am fine with them being a perennial insert, but their familiarity makes it crucial that Upper Deck keep another insert fresh. Premier, well beyond stale at this point, sadly returns for a fifth consecutive release. The Premier parallels have expanded to include foil ring /299, diamond rainbow foil /75, and sparkler /25. Yawn.
Tougher inserts will include base set photo variations, printing plates, 3-D Marquee Rookies, top rookie puzzle bounties, Wax On!, Platinum previews, a mysterious set called O-Peach-ee, and a very cool-looking set called Opichi inspired by the Ojibway word for robin from which O-Pee-Chee takes its name.
It looks like Upper Deck is aiming for a January 29 release. That would be a bit earlier than we have seen in recent years, though release dates are extremely tentative and often change.
