With 254 of 1,020 Topps Project70 cards now released, we stand at the 25% mark of the set. I’m still going strong tracking new releases every weekday in several ways: Click here to find a full gallery in numerical order, click here for the checklist in spreadsheet form, and click here to view individual artist galleries.
Below are my 10 favorite cards from the first quarter of the set. Unfortunately, five of them are Yankees cards!
Ermsy and Joshua Vides have two cards each and are the only artists with more than one card on the list. How much I’ve enjoyed Vides’s cards has been the biggest surprise of the set for me. I was not at all into his Project2020 cards on which he merely added some black linework directly over otherwise untouched original card images. But for his Project70 cards, the artist’s hand is more evident thanks to the addition of some simple motion lines and other embellishments, the card design elements rendered in stark black and white, and the cards end up with tremendous graphic punch. Since I’m not a Yankees fan, the only disappointing thing about Vides’s first five cards is that they all feature Yanks.
My enjoyment of Ermsy’s set so far has been no surprise. I plan on his being the only full artist set I’ll be buying. There’s just something about his wild style. I especially love the way he can maintain clear reference points from original Topps designs while simultaneously making the cards entirely his own.
