As someone with an affinity for both sports cards and art, I have loved seeing the recent rise of “card art.” From card collagist Tim Carroll to glitter-enthusiast Heavy J to the high-profile Topps Project 2020 set and countless other examples, the intersection of cards and art has never been quite so lively.
There are enough card artists out there now that one could even focus their collecting on art cards. Twitter user @project42cards is doing just that by collecting “artist renditions of the iconic 1952 Topps Jackie Robinson card.” Seeing his collection inspired me to take a crack at that card, and I ended up with two versions of a drawing that I am really happy with.
The first pictures Jackie in a Brooklyn cap as seen on the original 1952 card, and the second features Jackie in a 1945 Kansas City Monarchs lid. As a Kansas City native, the Monarchs are close to my heart, and I have delved pretty deep into the history of Jackie’s time with the Monarchs.
I’ve had 16 copies of each version printed at the standard trading card size of 2.5″ x 3.5″ on 130# card stock (which translates to an approximately 18 point card). One of each are staying with me, and the rest have been signed and numbered on the back and are awaiting new homes! I’m asking $12 for one card or $20 if you’d like one of each version. Prices include free shipping to the USA in a bubble mailer with tracking. (For shipping to other countries, please get in touch.) Please specify which version you would like if ordering only one card. You can pay with PayPal to aaronstilley [at] gmail, or reach me at that same address with any questions.
(I’ll be sure to update this post if I run out of one or both versions – if you’re still seeing pricing and payment information, then I still have at least one of each available.)
